Despite warning and punitive actions, the surge of Yaba inflow into the country and rapid increase in its use, particularly amongst the youths, is perhaps, the biggest danger being faced by the society. A section of unscrupulous police personnel have also been involved in this illicit trading, thus tarnishing the country’s image.
According to a newspaper report on Sunday, law enforcers arrested four persons for their alleged possession of 80 Yaba pills from Jamal Colony of Muradnagar under Bayazid Bostami Police Station in Port City Chattogram on July 13 night. Next day, ASI of the police station Amit Bhattachariya lodged a case against them. Tipped off, police conducted the drive in a room, number 15, of the Colony and detained them with the Yaba tablets, claimed the police.
However, two police witnesses in the case Md. Rubel and Mobarak Hossain told the media that they do not even know the four arrested accused persons. Police have taken their signatures in blank papers forcibly and asked to be the witnesses of the case. They said they are now in panic as police frequently asked them to come to the police station. Meanwhile, one of the four accused in the case has obtained bail from the court and lodged cases against 8 police personnel and a police source for falsely involving him in the case. The court, taking into cognizance of the case, has asked the Deputy Commissioner (north) of Chattogram Police Commission (CMP) to submit a report in this regard after a proper investigation.
The report said, the four persons were actually discussing over selling of a piece of land on that night. Police thought that they have enough money as they are land traders. As they failed to meet police demand, they were implicated in a false Yaba case. The cops also warned that they would be put into crossfire.
We find that over the course of a decade Yaba mainly comes from the neighbouring Myanmar and there are many factories inside that country along Bangladesh-Myanmar border to produce the pills. The youths, who are the prime targets of this illicit trade, must be made conscious about harmful effects of Yaba addiction.
For using police to remain in power through rigged cases, police think the government is theirs and there is nobody to stop them from making illegal earnings. Others in power are doing the same. Stealing public money is politics. As a result, it needs widespread purging and change.
