Cox’s Bazar, the world’s longest natural sea beach, has become a bustling hotspot as hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the area during the Eid holidays.
An estimated nine lakh visitors are expected over the 10-day holiday period, with more than 200,000 tourists already seen on the approximately 3-kilometre stretch of beach near Sugandha Point on Monday afternoon, reports BSS.
Families from across the country have traveled to Cox’s Bazar to enjoy the holiday, engaging in activities such as swimming, jet skiing, horse riding, and beach games. Despite the vibrant atmosphere, concerns remain as many visitors ignore the red flags warning of strong currents and dangerous sea conditions.
In the past two days, four people, including three tourists, have lost their lives while swimming in the rough waters. Holes and opposing currents have been reported in several areas, heightening the risk.
Sea-Safe Life Guard senior worker Mohammad Zahirul Islam highlighted the ongoing safety measures: “Our teams conduct surveillance from towers, patrol the sandbanks, and monitor the water via boats. However, tourist awareness about safety remains crucial.”
Hotel and restaurant owners report full occupancy, with 95% of rooms booked in over 500 accommodations for the peak days of Monday through Wednesday. Additionally, bookings for the subsequent seven days (June 12-19) are also high, with 80% of rooms reserved.
The combined maximum daily capacity of these hotels, resorts, guesthouses, and cottages stands at approximately 1,87,000 visitors.
Tourist Police Sub-Inspector Masudur Rahman confirmed increased security measures across the beach, hotel areas, and entertainment zones, with efforts to promptly address tourist concerns.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Salah Uddin assured that local authorities are working hard to maintain safety and order. “Mobile courts are actively monitoring and preventing any unlawful collection of extra rent,” he said.
Despite the challenges, tourists like Raisa Rahman and Abdullah Baki expressed their joy at visiting Cox’s Bazar, praising its natural beauty and recreational options as ideal for the Eid vacation.
