A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the seizure of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s vehicles and multiple land properties as part of an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation into allegations of illegally amassed wealth.
Vacation judge Md Abdullah Al Mamun of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court issued the order after reviewing an application filed by ACC Deputy Director Afroza Haque Khan. The order covers two cars, a 10-katha plot in the New Town project at Purbachal, and 118 kathas of land in Dohar and Ashulia.
ACC Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam confirmed that the estimated value of the seized assets stands at Tk4.79 crore.
According to the ACC application, Kamal is accused of acquiring Tk1.64 crore worth of assets beyond his known sources of income. Investigators also flagged suspicious transactions amounting to Tk5.59 crore across eight bank accounts. The agency has filed a case under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 as well as Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.
The court-appointed investigating officer will now examine the allegations in detail. ACC officials stated in their application that they learned during the inquiry that Kamal was attempting to sell, transfer or otherwise dispose of assets suspected to have been obtained illicitly, prompting the request for immediate seizure.
Kamal, who served as home minister for over a decade during the Awami League government, has not yet issued any public statement regarding the court’s order or the charges brought against him.
The ACC investigation is ongoing.
