Clashes between anti-discrimination demonstrators and activists of Awami League and its allied organisations have resulted in fatalities and injuries in Rangpur on Sunday. The incident unfolded during a protest and counter-protest near the Rangpur City Corporation office, where Ward Councilor Haradhan lost his life. Additionally, two others were fatally shot during the skirmish, with many more sustaining injuries.
The fatalities have been confirmed by Sardar Abdul Jalil and Mizanur Rahman Mizan of Rangpur Medical College, although the identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed.
The unrest stemmed from a protest movement demanding the resignation of the government, organized as part of a non-cooperation campaign. Demonstrators had gathered at the Public Library field in Rangpur when clashes escalated upon the arrival of Awami League leaders and their supporters at Shipthi Bazar. This confrontation led to tragic casualties in the vicinity of the City Bazar area.
Law enforcement agencies have deployed a substantial presence in the metropolitan area up to the time of this report.
