Staff Reporter  :
Justice Obaidul Hassan who has already been appointed as the 24th Chief Justice of the country said corruption is working like cancer everywhere.

While talking to the reporters in his office Justice Obaidul Hassan also said, “It’s not just only in judiciary, it’s not just only in any other particular department, it’s more or less everywhere.

If there is a desire to reduce corruption, it can be reduced to some extent.”

He mentioned that if social change is not brought, this society cannot be guided in the right direction by just judging, only by law and court.

Justice Obaidul Hassan does not feel that the judiciary is being used politically.

He said, “Judges are doing their work of judging as they are.

I will say only one thing, those who are involved in politics or those lawyer friends who are involved in politics, let them to do politics.

But in the court, they should show tolerance. They should be respectful to each other.”

The President has appointed Justice Obaidul Hassan, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Bangladesh in line with the article 95(1) of the Constitution, said a notification issued by the Law Ministry on Tuesday.

The appointment will come into effect after taking his oath, also read the notification issued by Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar.

The incumbent Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique will retire on September 25, as he will completed his 67 years, the age boundary of a Supreme Court judge, on that day.

Justice Obaidul Hassan will be the 24th Chief Justice of the country.

Reporters went to meet Justice Obaidul Hasan at his office in the Appellate Division on Wednesday morning.

At that time, Justice Obaidul Hasan talked about case backlog, what should be done to resolve the backlog and other issues.

“Reducing the backlog of pending cases at the courts across the country and to continue the works and attempts of my predecessors (previous Chief Justices) to this effect are the main challenge for me.

I will solicit opinions from all the judges of the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, lawyers and media persons and will share my views with them in order to reduce backlog of cases, to make the judiciary more faithful and to ensure justice for all,” Justice Obaidul Hassan said.

He said backlog of cases will be reduced and corruption will be eradicated and people’s faith in judiciary will enhance if all concerned works sincerely and perform their duties properly.

The new Chief Justice said he will talk to media for the interest of the judiciary and for the development of the judicial system. “The media is the mirror of the society.

I need to talk to media persons on different issues,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Justice Obaidul Hassan told reporters at his SC office that the politician lawyers need to be more patient.

He said the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and mediation system should be used and to some laws should be made updated in order to dispose of more cases and to reduce their backlog.

“There is shortage of faith in all sectors.

I will not say that there is no deficiency of faith in the judiciary.

But it has not occurred due to only the judges.

There are some other factors for this,” Justice Obaidul Hassan said.
