Police officers who have not returned to their positions will face legal consequences, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

He made this statement during a press briefing at the Home Ministry on Tuesday, October 1.

When asked about the number of absentees, the adviser estimated around 187 officers.

“Those who failed to return to duty will no longer be considered police officers—they will be regarded as criminals,” he stated.

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also announced plans to recruit new members to the police force.

“A notification regarding the recruitment of Sub-Inspectors will be issued within a few days,” he confirmed.

Addressing preparations for Durga Puja, the adviser mentioned that the ministry had held discussions about maintaining law and order.

He expressed hope that this year’s celebrations would be well-organized and peaceful.

“I wouldn’t say the law and order situation is excellent, but it is satisfactory. We’ve discussed ways to improve it, and I believe the situation will get better with time,” he added.

The meeting also addressed security concerns in the readymade garments sector and for various shrines and faith-based institutions across the country.
