Contractor disappears abandoning bridge construction in Kanaighat

Sylhet Bureau :

The long-standing demand of the area residents is that the contractor of company has disappeared after abandoning the bridge work on the Amri Canal in Kanaighat Laxmi Prasad Paschim Union at a cost of Tk 2.73 crore. The bridge construction work has been stopped.
It is known that in early 2022, former MP Hafiz Ahmed Majumdar laid the foundation stone of the Amri Canal bridge, funded by LGED, located between Laxmi Prasad and Kuorghari villages on the north side of the Amri Canal. Although the contractor company started work in full swing, approximately 2 years ago, the people of the bridge contractor company stopped the construction work and left with the equipment. Taking this opportunity, some local people looted the rods and LC stones worth lakhs of rupees from the contractor company located next to the bridge. Locals said that the construction of the bridge over the Amri Canal, which has been a long-standing demand of the locals, has become frustrating as to when the construction of the bridge over the Amri Canal will be completed.
Local residents of Lakshi Prasad village, including former principal of Charipara School and College Muzammil Ali and former headmaster of July High School Shibbir Ahmed, said that the locals were hoping that the long-standing deprivation in communication would end with the start of the bridge work. But since the construction of the bridge was abandoned by the construction workers, they have urged the relevant authorities of the current interim government to come forward to resume the work of the bridge as soon as possible.
According to the Upazila Engineer’s Office, the work of the bridge over the Amri Canal began in early 2022 at a cost of 2.73 crore taka with funding from LGED Sylhet. The construction company started the bridge work as usual and after the completion of 27 pilings, the contractor left the work. After informing the higher authorities about the matter, the tender process has already been completed to complete the bridge work over the Amri Canal, Upazila Engineer Abu Hanifa said.
