The statements of foreign dignitaries insisting on free elections are irrelevant as long as the government can hang on to power despite the piling up of failures leading the country to economic destitute. All the institutions of government are in disarray. More time it takes to give up power the crisis will become more dangerous for a peaceful change.
Since the election means vote robbery with the help of government officials so the people are getting restless and confrontational every day, elections under the present system being no hope for a change. In various places, including the capital of the country the frustrated people, seeing no end to their economic miseries, are gathering in streets increasingly in larger numbers asking the government to go.
It is not that the government is not perturbed seeing the protesters defying the police brutality. But the government is so much in disarray and the economy is so much in dire condition that the government has no ability to rescue the country from the impending economic disaster.
The oppressiveness by the revenue collectors is such that the businessmen are in acute crisis to keep their business going. New investments are not happening. Only bank robbers and corrupt ones under the government patronage are safe and living in comfort.
The government is reckless about public miseries in the belief that they have the police and government officials for winning the elections so there is no chance for losing power as the people’s vote is not needed. The government is power blind to see that it is collapsing from within.
Everybody has to see his own safety when the general public are in extreme rage and desperate. Yesterday’s huge public gathering in Chattogram can be ignored at the government’s own peril. The Election Commission could not hold election in
Gaibandha for internal vandalism of Awami League although major political parties shunned the election.
In the past also, assurances of free election was insisted upon by the United States and other democratic countries of the international community came to no use. Despite such international pressure, the election robbery continued showing greater defiance of the United States and the other Western powers including European Union. The reason was simple. The unelected government had no problem having normal relationship with international community without embarrassment.
In the background of the birth of Bangladesh by an Indian war with Pakistan in December 1971 it is most important to have free elections to establish that the people of Bangladesh are truly independent to be free to elect a government of their own.
It is still a puzzle how our leadership was made so weak as to effecting arrest of Bangabandhu to lead our struggle for democracy when he was about to sign the consensus agreement on autonomy as mandated by the people.
In Bangabandhu’s absence when he was in West Pakistan prison, independence for Bangladesh by Indian war with Pakistan came about.
The Awami League, the party founded by late great leader Mr H.S Suhrawardhy who personified democracy for building democracy in Pakistan, became in Bangladesh a democracy killer party.
The reality is it will be a farce for our foreign well-wishers to wait for the election to be held in December 2023, if possible under the government in chaos. The protests against the government are rising and getting bolder. Police power is not restrained and protesters are sent to jail the easy way. We are anxious to avoid blood bath of gun power politics.
Without negotiation by our foreign friends now the government has foolproof constitutional arrangement to make free election impossible. It will be too late to wait till it sinks by itself in the midst of violence.
Our fate is dependent on foreign powers. The government is also relying on its foreign friend or friends.
We need to transform politics and political leadership to end politics that has become a big money making business. Money making policy has corrupted the whole state machinery.
The election must not be for a new set of corrupt businessmen under the pretext of politics. Free election must mean free drive to oust corrupt businessmen from politics and to make democracy work.
The government has no easy choice to accept free elections. Many of them ask for assurance of safety. Bangladesh has become a very complex country for one step solution.
