Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman Talukder, Member of the Bangladesh Competition Commission, said that the Competition Act is extremely important for a free-market economy. The government has already enacted the Competition Act of 2012 and established the Competition Commission. He stated that if the law is properly implemented, syndicate and cartel activities will be eliminated, consumer interests will be protected, and investment will increase. This will encourage entrepreneurs to innovate and generate employment, thereby accelerating sustainable economic development.
He made these remarks on Tuesday (October 28) morning at a discussion meeting titled *“Awareness on Competition Act 2012 and Functions of the Bangladesh Competition Commission”* held at the Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner’s conference room.
He added that the country’s economic growth and overall development have always depended on maintaining a fair competitive environment in business. However, the new law should not create any barriers to business expansion; this must also be ensured. If the Competition Act is enforced correctly, syndicate and cartel activities will cease. During the event, speakers said that harmful chemicals, dyes, and shampoos are being used to preserve and market fish, fruits, and vegetables, which can cause serious health risks. Many involved may not even realize how dangerous these practices are. They also emphasized that not only large syndicates or big businessmen take advantage of loopholes—people exploit opportunities wherever they find them.
“We want a society free of syndicates in every sector. We must restore public trust, which has eroded in many areas,” the speakers said. They noted that confidence is lacking in sectors like education and
healthcare—people no longer believe their problems will be solved fairly. Therefore, rebuilding this trust is crucial. Everyone, from their respective positions, must work with utmost responsibility to restore it. “We must dismantle all forms of syndicate,” they concluded. Among others present at the discussion were Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADM) Ms. Nilufa Yasmin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Alomgir Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Sohel Rana, representatives of the Narayanganj
District Administration, officials from various government departments, representatives of the Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CAB Narayanganj, leaders of various business associations, and journalists from print and electronic media.
