The Commonwealth remains deeply committed to supporting the people of Bangladesh in their pursuit of sustainable development, democratic resilience, and social progress, Commonwealth Secretary-General-designate Shirley Botchwey said during her latest remarks on Sunday on Bangladesh’s role within the 56-nation bloc.

Botchwey, who will assume office as the first African woman to lead the organisation, stressed that Bangladesh continues to be an important and active member whose contributions to development, climate diplomacy, and peacekeeping reflect the spirit of cooperation that defines the Commonwealth.

Speaking at a briefing with journalists after a series of meetings with senior Bangladeshi officials, Botchwey highlighted the organisation’s readiness to strengthen collaboration in areas such as climate adaptation, blue economy development, digital transformation, and youth empowerment.
She noted that Bangladesh one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries has consistently championed global climate justice initiatives, making it a key partner for advancing the Commonwealth’s climate agenda.

Botchwey said the Commonwealth’s support will be aligned with Bangladesh’s long-term development aspirations, including its goals of achieving upper-middle-income status and building a more climate-resilient economy.

She reassured that the Commonwealth Secretariat is prepared to provide targeted technical assistance, policy advice, and capacity-building support, especially in sectors where Bangladesh faces critical challenges such as disaster preparedness, sustainable energy, and digital governance.

Underscoring the importance of democratic institutions and inclusive governance, Botchwey said that the Commonwealth is committed to helping Bangladesh uphold transparency, strengthen electoral systems, and promote broader civic participation.

She praised Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to expand women’s representation across public institutions and economic sectors, emphasising that gender equality remains a shared Commonwealth priority.

The incoming secretary-general also commended Bangladesh’s contributions to global peace and security, particularly through its longstanding leadership in UN peacekeeping missions.

She said such commitments demonstrate Bangladesh’s dedication not only to national development but also to international stability and humanitarian responsibility.

Botchwey added that with over 60 percent of Bangladesh’s population under the age of 35, the Commonwealth sees vast potential in supporting youth-led innovation, skills development, and entrepreneurship.

She reiterated that empowering young people is central to the organisation’s mission and will remain a cornerstone of its partnership with Bangladesh.

Concluding her remarks, Botchwey said the “Commonwealth family stands firmly beside the people of Bangladesh,” reaffirming that the organisation will continue working closely with the country to expand opportunity, strengthen resilience, and ensure sustainable progress in the years ahead.
