National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz on Monday said the commission is not enforcing any decisions unilaterally but rather putting forward amendment proposals based on the opinions and concerns expressed by political parties across various issues.
“Since many parties have raised objections regarding the National Constitutional Council, the commission has come up with different proposals,” he said while opening the 10th day of the second round of discussions between political parties and the commission at the Foreign Service Academy.
Representatives from 30 political parties, including the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, Gono Sanghati Andolon, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Biplobi Workers Party, and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, participated on Monday’s session with the National Consensus Commission.
The day’s agenda includes three key topics: expansion of subordinate courts at the upazila level, the declaration of a state of emergency, and women’s political representation.
Commission Members Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Md. Ayub Mia, and Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haidar were also present.
Ali Riaz emphasized that the commission is carefully monitoring the positions of the political parties to avoid any miscommunication or misunderstanding.
“For that reason, we have chosen to withhold certain matters from the discussion,” he said.
He noted that constructive dialogue is taking place with political leaders and stressed the need to maintain this momentum. “This process should continue, and everyone’s cooperation is essential to conclude the work efficiently and as comprehensively as possible.”
