Sylhet Bureau :
A College girl who went missing after going to her friend’s house in the same village in Beanibazar Upazila of Sylhet has not been found for almost three and a half months. The name of the young woman is Habiba Jannat Tamanna. Her family members fear that she has been abducted. The mysterious disappearance took place in Uttar Akakhjana village of Kurabazar Union of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Beanibazar Police Station Md. Ashraf Uzzaman confirmed the matter on Monday (June 30).

It is learned that the missing Habiba Jannat Tamanna is the daughter of the deceased Nizam Uddin, a very poor daily wage laborer of Uttar Akakhjana village of Kurabazar Union of the upazila.

On June 26, the missing college student’s elder sister, Rahela Akhter, filed a written complaint with the Beanibazar Police Station, naming four people, including a neighbor named Taslima Jannat, a friend of the missing Tamanna.

Her complaint is that Taslima Jannat has abducted and hidden her sister with the help of her mother and brother.

Relatives of the missing Habiba Jannat Tamanna said that while studying in the same madrasa, Habiba Jannat Tamanna developed a friendship with Taslima Jannat, the daughter of Abdul Basit, a Kuwaiti expatriate from North Akakhajana village. Since the two friends had a close relationship, they often went to both houses. Even spending the night at each other’s houses was a normal occurrence.

Relatives also said that on the morning of January 22, Habiba Jannat Tamanna went to Taslima Jannat’s house like any other day. Then, when Taslima’s mother called Habiba’s brother Hayat Ahmed on her cell phone to ask him to keep Habiba at their house for a few days, he refused. Later, although Habiba’s siblings were in contact with her on their cell phones until the night of March 14, the contact stopped the next day, March 15. When Habiba did not contact her family even after a couple of days, the relatives became worried.

Later, they rushed to Taslima’s house. When they went there, they found out that Taslima, her mother, and siblings had gone somewhere else without informing anyone. But no one knows where they went.

Habiba Jannat Tamanna’s elder sister Rahela Akhter said, Habiba left the house on the morning of January 22 after receiving Taslima’s call and never returned. Complaining in the area to rescue my sister was of no avail. Even after seeking justice in the local union council, she had to face various comments from the villagers. Many people discouraged me from coming to the police station, saying that if I go to the police station, I will get stuck in a lawsuit and it will cost a lot of money. Unable to find a way, I filed a written complaint with the Beanibazar Police Station to find my sister.

Delwar Hossain, a member of Ward No. 4 of Kurarbazar Union Parishad, said, “When we failed to find Habiba despite trying in various ways, I advised the victim’s family to seek legal assistance.”

Beanibazar Police Station (SI) Al Amin said, “We have spoken to the victims since receiving the complaint. We have collected the mobile phone numbers of the accused. We are taking the help of information technology to identify the location of the accused. Because only if we can identify their location will the main mystery be revealed.”

In this regard, Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ashraf Uzzaman said, “We have received a written complaint from the family of the missing Habiba Jannat Tamanna. An investigation into the complaint is underway.”
