NN Online:
Widespread monsoon rains and rising fears of flooding have forced the suspension of classes and exams in 1,800 educational institutions across Noakhali district.
The decision was made at a meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee on Wednesday, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Muhammad Ismail at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
District Primary Education Officer Israt Nasima Habib confirmed that academic activities in 1,253 primary schools have been halted until at least July 12. Teachers, however, will remain on-site to protect school property.
District Secondary Education Officer Nur Uddin Mohammad Jahangir reported that ongoing exams in over 500 secondary schools and madrasas have also been postponed.
According to the District Meteorological Department, Noakhali received 223 mm of rain in the 24 hours up to 3 PM on July 9, with forecasts indicating continued rainfall.
At least five upazilas—including Noakhali Sadar, Subarnachar, Senbagh, Kabirhat, and Companiganj—are already waterlogged. Many homes, roads, and public areas are submerged, with some areas facing knee- to waist-deep water, disrupting daily life.
Companiganj UNO Tanvir Farhad Shamim raised concerns about agricultural damage due to illegal dams blocking drainage in the Muchapur canal. Authorities have asked the Water Development Board to remove the obstruction immediately.
Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Istiak Ahmed said preparations are underway to tackle the situation, with volunteers mobilized and emergency supplies—like water purification systems and medicines—already stockpiled. Medical teams are on alert to address waterborne diseases and snake bites.
Schools have been identified as temporary shelters, and a control room has been established to coordinate relief and response efforts.
