City University has suspended all classes, examinations, and academic activities until Thursday (30 October) following a series of violent clashes with students of Daffodil International University in the Birulia Khagan area of Savar.

Announcing the decision, City University Vice-Chancellor Brig Gen (retd) Prof Dr Engr Md Lutfor Rahman said, “Considering the current unrest and safety concerns, all academic activities have been postponed until Thursday.” The confrontation, which began late Sunday night (26 October) and continued into the early hours of Monday, caused extensive property damage, including several burnt vehicles and vandalised university facilities.

According to eyewitnesses, the violence stemmed from a minor altercation when a City University student allegedly spat near a Daffodil student riding a motorcycle outside a hostel occupied by Daffodil students.

The situation quickly escalated as around 50 City University students reportedly attacked the hostel around 9 p.m., throwing bricks and vandalizing property.

As videos of the incident spread rapidly on social media, hundreds of Daffodil students gathered and marched toward City University, triggering hours of intense clashes, counter-attacks, and widespread destruction.

Members of Daffodil’s proctorial body said they had contacted City University authorities seeking immediate intervention.
However, the situation worsened after a Daffodil student was allegedly assaulted, prompting a group of Daffodil students to storm the City University campus after midnight.

During the rampage, three university buses and one car were set ablaze, while another bus, two cars, a motorcycle, and parts of the administrative building were severely damaged.

At around 9:30 a.m., Daffodil University Proctor Sheikh Muhammad Ali told the media that nine of their students were still being held on the City University campus.
“We are working to recover them. Around 150 of our students were injured in the violence,” he said.
Both universities later confirmed that 11 detained Daffodil students were handed over to Daffodil authorities around 2:30 p.m.

However, Daffodil officials claimed that the released students had sustained serious injuries from the beatings during the clashes.

Law enforcement personnel have since been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation, while both university administrations have urged students to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation on social media.
