At least 30 people were injured in a clash between two groups over fishing rights in a disputed pond in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj.
The incident occurred on Friday morning at Sarappur village in Madhainagar Union.
Five of the injured, who are in critical condition, have been shifted to various hospitals in Bogura and Dhaka.
According to local residents, there had been a longstanding dispute among the beneficiaries of the Nimgachi community-based fish farming project over the eight-bigha waterbody known as Mongla Pond in Sarappur village.
On Friday morning, when one group started fishing, the opposing group tried to stop them.
An argument broke out, leading both sides to engage in a violent clash using local weapons. The hour-long confrontation turned the entire area into a battleground.
Those seriously injured include Rashedul Islam Rasu, Almas Uddin, Shahidul Islam, Shariful Islam, Delwar Hossain, Nazrul Islam, Kawser Hossain, Sobahan Ali, Abdul Jalil, Abdul Barik, Monirul Islam, and Shakil Ahmed.
Of them, Rashedul Islam Rasu, Almas Uddin, Shahidul Islam, Shariful Islam, and Delwar Hossain were shifted to hospitals in Bogura and Dhaka due to critical injuries. The others are receiving treatment at Tarash Upazila Health Complex.
Dr. Shyamal Kumar, on duty at the hospital, said the victims had multiple injuries caused by sharp weapons.
Tarash Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ziaur Rahman said, “Police were deployed at the scene after receiving information about the clash.
The situation is now under control. No case has been filed by either party yet.”
