A clash erupted between two groups in Rasulpur area of Tarabo Municipality under Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila on Monday (8 December) around 11 pm over a comment on a Facebook post. A total of five people were injured, including one who sustained a bullet wound. The injured include Shahidul alias Dakat Shahidul, son of Al Islam from the Barab Chapra Mosque area of Tarabo Municipality. Shahidul, who was hit by a bullet, was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. According to locals and eyewitnesses, Sakibul Hasan, son of late Sujat Ali from Rasulpur area and a member of the Rupganj Human Rights Organization, made a post on his Facebook profile regarding his membership. In response, Mahim Miraj, son of Abu Dayen Pradhan from the same area and former president of Tarabo Municipality’s Ward-9 Chhatra Dal (North), commented “chu… ling pong” on the post.
Following this, an argument broke out between Sakibul and Mahim around 11 pm. Soon, people from both sides engaged in a clash using pistols and local weapons. During the attack, several houses including Sakibul’s residence were vandalized and looted. Shahidul Islam alias Dakat Shahidul, a former Jubo League leader, joined the clash on behalf of Mahim. During the confrontation, Shahidul was injured after being hit by a bullet.
Regarding the incident, victim Sakibul Islam said, I was elected as a member of the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission, Rupganj branch. I shared this on my personal Facebook profile. In response, Mahim Miraj, nephew of local Jubo Dal president Robiul, intentionally posted an offensive comment. When I protested, Mahim and his armed group attacked my house, vandalized and looted it. Rupganj’s top criminal, Dakat Shahidul, accompanied them with his pistol, and he accidentally shot himself during the attack. We demand proper justice for this incident. Rupganj Police Station OC Tariqul Islam said, Police were dispatched to the spot after receiving information about the clash over a Facebook comment. The situation is now under control. We learned that about five people from both groups were injured. Cases will be filed against both sides.
