Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed stated on Saturday that the judiciary is the cornerstone of Bangladesh’s democracy.
He emphasised that the judiciary’s strength lies in the balanced cooperation between the bench and the bar.
He made these remarks while addressing lawyers who will join the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association in 2024.
“The judiciary is the cornerstone of our democracy, and its power depends on the balanced cooperation of two key pillars – the bench and the bar,” he said.
The Chief Justice further noted, “The association is not just a part of the
judicial process, but an equal partner in upholding the sanctity and efficacy of justice.”
During the meeting at the Supreme Court Bar Association building in Dhaka, he told the new members: “As a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, your role is not only to serve as a lawyer, but to be a guardian of the legal profession and an important partner in the administration of justice.”
He added, “My expectation from the nation, and personally, is that you will act with professionalism, care, and a deep sense of responsibility so that the judiciary can fulfil its constitutional duties.”
The Chief Justice also outlined the steps taken since assuming office, including the introduction of a judicial reform roadmap, a proposal to establish a separate judiciary secretariat, and the creation of a ‘Judicial Appointment Council.’
Additionally, he highlighted the formation of the Supreme Judicial Council for the removal of judges, a responsibility previously held by Parliament.
