In a bid to enhance transparency and public oversight in governance, the Public Administration Reform Commission has put forth a proposal to establish ‘Nagorik Committees’ at both district and upazila levels.
The initiative also recommends including student representatives in these committees to ensure a broader societal perspective.
The commission, led by its chief, Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, formally presented its report to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (5 February) at the State Guest House Jamuna.
The recommendations aim to strengthen civic participation and accountability in the administration.
According to the report, these newly proposed committees will function similarly to parliamentary standing committees, which scrutinize the performance of government ministries.
The ‘District Nagorik Committees’ and ‘Upazila Nagorik Committees’ are expected to comprise individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to ensure a more inclusive representation of public interests.
Moreover, the report outlines a structured approach for these committees to operate effectively. It mandates that meetings should be held every four months, during which members will assess the quality and efficiency of government services.
Their findings and recommendations will then be submitted to the deputy commissioner and relevant departmental heads for necessary action.
