An organized gang that lured ordinary people with promises of better lives and jobs in Europe has been exposed. Those who succumbed to the temptation were taken to Libya and held for ransom by the gang.
The mastermind, Mahabub Pathan, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police. He was apprehended at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport last Friday (June 28) evening.
CID Superintendent of Police (Media) Azad Rahman provided this information on Monday. He stated that the gang had been deceiving people for a long time by taking advantage of their simplicity.
The victims were first taken to Dubai with the promise of being sent to Europe. From there, they were transported to Benghazi in Libya via Egypt. In Benghazi, Mahabub Pathan and his accomplices kept the victims captive and tortured them for ransom. The gang recorded videos of the torture and sent them to the victims’ families to collect the ransom.
Azad Rahman revealed that Mahabub Pathan had been residing in Libya with his family for a long time and was leading the human trafficking ring under the guise of heading the Bangladeshi community in Benghazi.
