The tin roof is torn and hanging. Teachers and students walk under the hanging tin roof. Even with a little rain, water flows through the leaky tin roof. Student’s notebooks get wet. In addition, there appeared cracks in the walls of the rooms. Sometimes the plaster falls off the walls. The building became extremely risky. And the students of Aaruaborni Government Primary School (No. 40) in Chitalmari upazila under Bagerhat district are being taught in this risky building. As a result, teachers and students, along with their guardians apprehend that a major accident may be happened at any time. On the other hand, due to the shortage of classrooms, the young students are being taught in a cramped classroom. Therefore, the teachers of that school have demanded the construction of a new building to improve the quality of education.
According to relevant sources, Aaruaborni Government Primary School was established in 1952. It was nationalized in 1973. This four-room tin roofed building was built in 1989. Since then, two rooms of the building are being used as class rooms, one room is used as a store-room and the rest one is used as office room. Currently, cracks have appeared in the walls and beams in many places of the school. The plaster of the roof is falling off. The tin roof is torn and hanging. Due to the lack of alternative arrangements, students are being taught in this risky building. In spite of that informing the concerned higher authorities in writing of the matter on several times no step was taken so far to solve the problems.
The students of the different classes told, we are always afraid of the collapse of the class rooms as well as the school building. They added, moreover, even if there is a slight breeze, waterfalls and wet the books. The plaster of the roof opens in the classroom and falls on our bodies. When the clouds appear in the sky, our parents do not want to let ourselves come to the school.
Two guardians named Shaha Alam Daria and Rahmat Molla told, our children take their lessons in this school. But we are afraid to send our child to the school because of its building is very risky. Even after a long time, the building is not being declared abandoned.
Assistant teachers of the school, Sultana Parvin and Lopa Rani Mandal told, on the one hand, due to the shortage of classrooms, students have to sit in a pile. Due to which teaching is disrupted to a great extent. On the other hand, the building has become risky. Muhammad Ferdaus Hossain, Headmaster of the school said, some 226 students are studying in my school. The teachers continue to teach in the building every day, taking risks.
