Chicken, fish, vegetable prices surge in Dhaka’s kitchen markets

Despite the government’s repeated assurances of market stability during Ramadan, prices of chicken, fish, and some vegetables saw an upward trend in Dhaka’s kitchen markets on Monday.
Lemon and cucumber prices remained high as the previous day. Meanwhile, chicken and mutton prices edged up, though beef prices remained unchanged.
Traders at Karwan Bazar, the capital’s largest vegetable hub, attribute the rising costs to higher demand during Ramadan, despite an adequate supply of most items, reports UNB.
Rahim Sarder, a vegetable wholesaler at Karwan Bazar, said lemon and cucumber prices are expected to decrease gradually as supply improves.
He also said newly arrived vegetables are selling at slightly higher prices but the prices of brinjal (eggplant) and tomato showed a slight decline compared to the last two days.
On Monday, the eggplant was selling at Tk 70 to 110 per kg, brinjal (long) at Tk 60 to 80 per kg, green chili at Tk 60 to 70 per kg based on quality, bean at Tk60 per kg, tomato at Tk 30 to 35 per kg, carrot at Tk 35 to 40 per kg, potato at Tk 20 to 30 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 100 to 120 a kg, okra at Tk 80 to 90 per kg, cucumber at Tk 60 to 80 per kg, sponge gourd at Tk 80 per kg, arum at 80 to 90 kg, radish at Tk 60 per kg, green papaya at Tk 50 to 60 per kg, French bean at Tk 100 to 120 kg and snake gourd at Tk 50 to 60 per kg.
The local variety of onion was selling at Tk 40 to 50 per kg, while the imported onion was at Tk 35 to 45 per kg. Imported garlic’s price also increased and was selling at Tk 240 per kg and local garlic at Tk 160 a kg.
The locally produced ginger was selling at Tk 160 per kg while the imported one at Tk 130 to 140 per kg. The price of red lentil remained high and the fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 150 per kg while the imported item (coarse variety) was selling at Tk 110 per kg.
The prices of fish have increased by Tk 20 to 50 per kg.
Among the fish- Puti was selling at Tk 400 per kg, live puti at Tk 500 kg, mola at Tk 500 a kg, cultivated koi at Tk 220 to 250 a kg, Fali Chanda (Rupchanda) at Tk 1,200 a kg, Chanda small at Tk 400 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 500 to 600 per kg, Eel at Tk 700 to 900 a kg, Meni at Tk 500 a kg, sheat (boal) at Tk 600 to 1,200 per kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 600 to 650 a kg, Coral Fish at Tk 600 to 700 per kg based on size, river Pangas at Tk 500 per kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 150 to 220 per kg, Rajputi at Tk 450 per kg, Tilapia at Tk 240 kg and Ruhi at Tk 350 to 400 per kg.
Beef is selling for Tk 750 to 780 per kg the mutton at Tk 1,150 to 1,200 a kg.
A medium size local chicken (cock) was selling at Tk 500 to 600 per piece and hen at Tk 450 to 500 per piece. The boiler chicken’s price stands at Tk 190 to 220 per kg.
