Chattogram Port heart of Bangladesh’s Economy: Chief Adviser
Chattagram Bureau :
Chattagram Port is the ‘heart’ of Bangladesh’s economy and has stressed on its modernization, said Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.
“This heart needs to be connected to our neighbors. For this, I have talked about Nepal and the seven northeastern states of India (Seven Sisters). If they join it, they will benefit, and so will we. Those who do not join will lag behind.” We will have a huge economy if we can turn Chattagram Port into a huge heart.
If we provide port facilities and a vast area, any businessman will come and invest here. He will not have to be requested. He will come on his own. We have talked about digitalization.
Everything is needed. Before that, we need a dream. Which we will do. With this, the economy of Bangladesh will start changing rapidly. Chief Advisor made this comment in a directional speech to port officials at Yard No. 5 of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of the Chattagram Port on Wednesday (May 14).
Chief Advisor said, I am seeing the situation of the Chattagram Port on the screen. In a country like ours, we are talking about one port, a few terminals. Many countries have 20-30 such ports, terminals of world scale, world size. Looking at that, we feel very weak. Patients will not survive for long with this port.
It cannot be sustained. So it has to be strengthened. It has to be strengthened continuously. Strengthening it once is not enough. That is our challenge. Regarding jobs, Chief Advisor said, will they bring people from their countries when they are coming? If the port is to be run, our people will run it. There is no alternative to this.
If our people are taught, they will learn very easily. The cost is low. If we have to bring workers from Europe to run our port, the business will boom.
The port will be big, the capacity will be big. Despite technology, where one person was needed earlier, now five people will be needed as the port has grown. I say, even if we sign today, it will take five years to operate as a port. I assume 2030-31.
