Chattogram Bureau:
The court has postponed the election of the board of directors of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), a century-old trade organization of businessmen and industrialists of Chittagong, for two weeks. On Thursday afternoon, a seven-member full bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court ruled to postpone the election. As a result, the Chattogram Chamber election will not be held tomorrow, Saturday.
The chamber authorities have informed all the concerned organizations about the postponement of the election on the court’s instructions. Mohammad Belal, General Secretary of the Chattogram Garments Accessories Group, complained to the FBCCI’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Tribunal to exclude the participation of inactive members of the Chattogram Chamber’s Trade and Town Group in the election.
He also filed a writ in the court in this regard. 12 people were elected as directors in the general category, 6 in the associate category, and 3 from the town association and 3 from the trade group by the votes of the members of the Chattogram Chamber. The president and two vice-presidents were elected by the votes of the directors.
However, this time, three people each were on the way to becoming directors in the town association and trade group categories, and they had no rivals.
The last time the board of directors was formed in the Chattogram Chamber was in 2013 through voting. Since then, the leadership of this organization has been elected by businessmen without any competition.
Meanwhile, the joint secretary of the chamber, Nurul Absar Chowdhury, said in a notification sent to the Daily New Nation yesterday that according to the previously announced schedule in a letter signed by the chairman of the chamber’s election board, Monowara Begum, the chamber’s voting activities have been suspended tomorrow (November 1) Saturday in compliance with the court order.
Meanwhile, the activities of the letters sent by the CCCI Election Commission and the chamber authorities to the electricity department, fire service, civil surgeon, City Corporation, traffic, Ansar, police and army and other related departments will also be suspended.
