The road from Notun Bazar Jardis More to Handial Charmatha in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna has now become a death trap. A very important road, it is the way of movement for countless people of Handial, Nimaichada, Bilchalon and Gunaigacha unions and Chatmohar municipality.
However, since there has been no renovation or reconstruction of the road for many years, it has now become unusable. Although the reconstruction work of the road started during the previous Awami League government, it has not seen the light of day. Because the contractor abandoned the work after the change in the political situation.
Since then, another name for the misery is “Chatmohar-Handial road”. Numerous people travel on this road every day, risking their lives. Large potholes have formed in the middle of the road. Due to the creation of numerous potholes and waterlogging of mud, no one wants to go on this road easily.
Especially sick patients, pregnant women, children, the elderly, students and working people are constantly suffering. The authorities concerned do not seem to be paying attention to the matter at all. Although local residents have repeatedly protested and formed human chains, no visible steps have been taken to repair the road to date. In protest of this situation and demanding the speedy reconstruction of the road, a human chain was held simultaneously at 9 points on the road at 10 am last Saturday (August 2) at the initiative of a social organization called ‘Chetanay Handial’.
The speakers at the human chain said that this is not a political program. This is a movement to realize the just demands of the common people. This road is one of our means of survival. If we do not protest now, we will have to suffer bigger accidents in the future. They said that the movement will continue until the road is reconstructed and if necessary, a memorandum will be submitted to bring it to the attention of the district administration and the concerned ministry. Meanwhile, the Pabna Roads and Highways Department has started laying bricks in the large holes of the road by pouring bricks. On Saturday, it was seen that the holes in the road are being filled and bricks are being laid.
