BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the nation now has a renewed opportunity—gained through immense sacrifices—to build a new and truly democratic Bangladesh.
“The main objective of the 1971 Liberation War was to establish a democratic state, one founded on the collective will of the people,” he said during a views exchange session with teachers and students at Thakurgaon St. Mother Teresa School.
He lamented that democracy has long been absent from the country, alleging that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic rule has dismantled democratic institutions and clung to power without the people’s mandate.
“We have been given another chance. Our sons and daughters have sacrificed their blood to give us this opportunity—to create a new Bangladesh where democracy can genuinely flourish,” Fakhrul stated.
He also reflected on global unrest, saying the world is increasingly plagued by violence, revenge, and conflict. “The only solution is to spread love and compassion, and to build a new society where people can live with dignity and peace.”
Earlier in the day, Fakhrul attended the plaque unveiling ceremony of the Sri Sri Shanidev Temple at Kalibari Temple premises in Thakurgaon town as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, he reassured members of the Hindu community of their equal place in the country. “Every individual born in Bangladesh is a proud citizen. You have the same rights as anyone else. Never consider yourselves inferior or outsiders.”
He emphasized that members of the Hindu community have the full right to support and participate in the political process of any party. “This is your democratic right, and we are ready to sacrifice our lives to uphold it.”
Recalling the unity of the 1971 Liberation War, Fakhrul noted, “We fought side by side, and at that time, no one asked whether someone was Hindu or Muslim.”
He also urged caution against the misuse of social media platforms. “Facebook and other platforms are increasingly being used to destabilize society. Stay vigilant against such misuse,” he warned.
