Authorities of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway have announced stringent measures against unruly drivers and vehicles, including fines and permanent bans for traffic violations.
Vehicles using the Dhaka Elevated Expressway will face penalties based on video evidence for offences such as overspeeding. A vehicle receiving three fines will be permanently barred from accessing the expressway.
Captain (Retd.) Hasib Hasan Khan, Director of Traffic, Safety, and Security at First Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Operation and Maintenance) Company Limited, made the announcement during a press conference at the Central Control Building in Kuril on Saturday.
“Starting from February 21, police will lodge cases for overspeeding based on video surveillance footage. We will provide them with all recordings of traffic violations,” Khan stated.
“Expressway users must strictly follow the rules to ensure safety and security,” he added.
Key Regulations for the Dhaka Elevated Expressway include three strikes rule. The vehicles committing three traffic offences will face a lifetime ban from using the expressway.
They are lane discipline such as strict adherence to designated lanes is mandatory, and unjustified lane changes will result in penalties. the second one is parking and stopping.
Stopping or parking is strictly prohibited. In case of breakdowns, vehicles must move to emergency lanes and notify authorities immediately.
Others are damage liability, prohibited vehicles, passenger dropping and safe driving practices.
Vehicle owners will be held financially responsible for any damage caused to expressway infrastructure, including toll booths and lanes. Failure to compensate will lead to legal action.
Vehicles emitting black smoke, open trucks carrying standing passengers, and poorly secured cargo trucks will not be allowed.
Dropping passengers on the expressway is forbidden and will result in legal consequences. Drivers must maintain safe distances to prevent accidents and are prohibited from using mobile phones while driving.
The additional restrictions are drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or harmful substances are strictly banned.
Heavy construction vehicles, slow-moving machinery, and two- or three-wheeled vehicles are not permitted. Trucks and pickups must cover their cargo when passing through toll lanes.
Improper towing of vehicles and open trucks carrying passengers through toll lanes are prohibited. Discarding items, including toll tickets and trash, is strictly forbidden.
Expressway officers and security personnel will remain on duty 24/7 to assist in emergencies.
The authorities emphasised that these comprehensive measures aim to promote responsible driving behaviour, minimise accidents, and ensure the safety of all commuters on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway.
