Staff Reporter :
A case has been lodged following the recovery of a dismembered body stuffed inside a drum near the National Eidgah gate, adjacent to the High Court.
Police confirmed that the remains of 42-year-old Ashraful Haque were discovered in 26 pieces on Thursday, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khaled Monsur said.
Ashraful’s sister, Anjina Begum, filed the case at Shahbagh Police Station on Friday, naming the victim’s friend, Jarez Mia, as the prime suspect, in addition to several unidentified accomplices.
No arrests have been made yet. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to track down those involved, OC Monsur added.
The dismembered body was recovered from a blue plastic drum on Thursday. Although the identity was initially unclear, fingerprint analysis later confirmed the deceased as Md Ashraful Haque, hailing from Gopalpara in Badarganj, Rangpur.
Family members reached the Dhaka Medical College morgue this morning to receive the body, saying Ashraful had no known disputes or enemies.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Division, said Ashraful had arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday (11 November) for business-related work.
He last contacted his family around 9pm on Wednesday, after which he could not be reached.
Ashraful was an authorised importer of onions and potatoes from India and Myanmar and held a government licence for the trade.
According to witnesses, a man in a van dropped off four plastic drums around 2pm on Thursday and left two of them at the spot before departing.
Nearly four hours later, when a stench began coming from the drums, a passerby raised the alarm.
Police officers stationed at the High Court gate opened the drums and initially found rice inside. After clearing the rice, they discovered body parts sealed in polythene bags.
Shahbagh Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Mainul Islam Khan said the body was recovered around 6pm.
The CID Crime Scene Unit arrived at approximately 7:15pm and confirmed the victim’s identity through fingerprint verification.
