Chittagong University (CU) authorities on Tuesday filed a case against 1,095 individuals, including members of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), over clashes between students and villagers that left at least 240 people injured on August 31.
The case was lodged by Abdur Rahim, CU’s Deputy Registrar (Security), with Hathazari Police Station, naming 95 individuals directly, said the station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Abu Mohammed Kawsar Hossain.
In addition to the named accused, between 800 and 1,000 unidentified individuals have also been charged, the OC confirmed.
“The university administration filed an attempted murder case over the attack on students with sharp weapons. Police have registered the case and begun an investigation, but no arrests have been made yet,” the OC added.
While the OC refrained from confirming the political identity of the accused, campus and police sources indicated that the FIR mentioned names of local Jubo League and BCL leaders and activists.
At least 240 people sustained injuries in two phases of clashes between villagers and CU students. The violence erupted following an alleged assault on a female student Saturday night and escalated on Sunday (August 31).
