A case has been filed naming Jatiya Party faction chief GM Quader and 18 others over an attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad, during clashes in the capital last month.
The case application was submitted to Ramna Police Station on Tuesday afternoon by Akteruzzaman Samrat Majhi, organisational secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad.
In addition to the 19 named individuals, the petition also accused 100 to 150 unidentified people in connection with the attack.
Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Faruq confirmed receipt of the application but noted that the incident did not occur within the station’s jurisdiction.
“The petition has been accepted and is under review. We are analysing CCTV footage of the incident and have forwarded the matter to senior officials for further consideration. A decision will be made after thorough examination,” he told reporters.
The violence took place on August 29 in Kakrail, when a procession by Gono Odhikar Parishad passed in front of the Jatiya Party central office. Clashes erupted between activists of the two parties, and security forces later intervened.
Witnesses reported that army and police personnel beat several Gono Odhikar leaders and activists in front of the party’s office, leaving party president Nurul Haque seriously injured.
Following the incident, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) issued a statement saying that law enforcement personnel had initially urged both sides to remain calm.
“Despite repeated appeals, some leaders and activists ignored the requests and attempted to escalate the situation through mob violence,” the statement read.
The ISPR claimed that protesters launched attacks on security personnel and intensified the unrest around 9 p.m. with a torch procession, pelting stones and attempting arson. In response, law enforcers resorted to force to restore order.
Five army members were injured in the clashes, according to the ISPR statement.
The case now awaits further scrutiny by police authorities before any charges are formally lodged.
