Under the Green and Clean initiative, canal recovery and cleaning work has started in Fatulla area of Narayanganj to address waterlogging that has persisted for nearly two decades. The work began on Tuesday with cleaning of a canal in the Kaiyum area of Fatulla, led by the Water Development Board.

According to district administration sources, Narayanganj city has about 92 kilometers of canals. Among them, approximately 17 kilometers have been completely blocked due to illegal encroachments and other reasons, stopping water flow.

To restore water flow, the Water Development Board has started recovering nearly 11 kilometers of canal at 56 different spots across 9 canals.

Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah said, “Among the many major problems in Narayanganj city, waterlogging has been an issue for the past two decades. For a long time, the residents of this city have suffered from waterlogging.”

“After receiving complaints, I along with my team inspected areas from East Lalpur to Pioneer Mosque and the embankments of DNDR,” he added.

He further said, “After the inspection, I formed a committee which submitted a report to the ministry. We were able to convince the ministry, and our project was approved.”

“We will recover the blocked 17 kilometers of canals and also plan to clean the canals and develop fish sanctuaries. As part of this plan, the Water Development Board has begun recovering nearly 11 kilometers of canal at 56 spots in 9 canals. Our commitment is to reduce the city’s water logging to a manageable level. I appeal to the people of Narayanganj not to fill the canals with household waste or furniture after they are cleared.”

Present at the event were Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Md. Alamgir Hossain, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Jafar Sadik Chowdhury, Fatulla Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Asaduzzaman Noor, Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sadia Akter, Siddhirganj Assistant Commissioner (Land) Debayani Kar, along with officials from various government departments.
