Canada has reiterated its strong support for Bangladesh as the country advances toward a peaceful democratic transition through free, fair, inclusive, and participatory elections.
“Canada stands with Bangladesh as it moves towards a peaceful transition through free, fair, inclusive, and participatory elections,” said Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh in a statement posted on the High Commission’s official Facebook page on Monday.
The envoy welcomed the signing of the July National Charter, describing it as a key milestone in Bangladesh’s political journey. The Charter, signed by political parties after more than a year of consensus-building under the Interim Government, outlines major democratic reforms for implementation, reflecting a collective commitment to national unity, accountability, and transparent governance.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, speaking soon after the signing on Friday, said the ‘July National Charter 2025’ symbolizes unity and will guide the nation toward the upcoming national elections in February. He expressed confidence that the elections would be conducted fairly and festively while maintaining harmony among political stakeholders.
Diplomatic observers have hailed the Charter as a significant step in Bangladesh’s political transition, emphasizing that inclusive participation and adherence to democratic principles will bolster public confidence and ensure long-term stability.
Canada, a longstanding development partner of Bangladesh, has supported initiatives across governance, education, gender equality, and human rights. The High Commission’s statement underscores Canada’s continued commitment to strengthening Bangladesh’s democratic institutions and promoting good governance.
