Campaign against violence and child marriage launched

A national campaign to prevent violence against women and child marriage was held in Shibganj, Bogura on Wednesday with the slogan “Stand up, protest, and resist all forms of violence against women and girls.

” The awareness program took place at Abhirampur High School field, where teachers, students, parents, members of civil society organizations, and people from various professions participated.

The event was organized under the project “Enhancing Social and Human Rights Participation of the Marginalized Population of Bangladesh Especially Women and Girls (HOPE)”, implemented by the NGO Pollishree with the support of NETZ Bangladesh.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ziaur Rahman attended the event as the chief guest. In his address, he said, “Violence against women and child marriage are major obstacles to social progress. To eliminate these social curses, joint efforts from families, educational institutions, and local administration are essential.”

Shamsun Nahar, Project Director of Pollishree’s HOPE Project and Chair of the campaign, delivered the welcome speech.

She said, “Creating positive attitudes and awareness in society is crucial for establishing women’s rights and dignity. It is not only about women; it’s the foundation for overall social development.

“Among the special guests were Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station Shahinuzzaman, Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Hannan, Upazila Women Affairs Officer Ashraf Ali, Upazila Cooperative Officer Kazi Fatema-tuz-Zohura, NETZ Bangladesh Program Manager Afsana Binte Amin, and Mokamtola Union Panel Chairman Fahima Akter.

The event was conducted by human rights activist and civil society member Rabiul Islam Robi.

During the campaign, discussions were held on protecting women’s rights, the harmful impacts of child marriage, legal aid services, and ways to build social resistance against gender-based violence. A rights-based drama and a signature campaign were also held as part of the awareness activities.
