Following the submission of the first four reform commission reports on 15 January, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s reform process, the European Union (EU) has urged the interim government and political parties
to identify priority reforms through consensus.

The EU is closely monitoring developments and emphasising the need for consensus-driven reforms to strengthen democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Expressing its readiness to support ambitious reforms, the EU has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic governance and institutional resilience in Bangladesh.

EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, recently met with the BNP leadership to discuss its political platform, following Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s announcement of potential election dates in December.

These dialogues are part of the EU’s efforts to encourage inclusive, transparent political dialogue and ensure a fair electoral process.
Simultaneously, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing human rights and reinforcing Bangladesh’s judicial system.

The US government stressed the importance of reforms that uphold fairness, transparency, and security for all citizens. Judicial reforms, in particular, are seen as critical to fostering an impartial and accountable legal framework.
The newly appointed US Chargé d’Affaires to Bangladesh, Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, held her first official engagement with the interim government.

During discussions with Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Ambassador Jacobson explored key reform initiatives, including labour rights, judicial reforms, and counter-terrorism measures. These initiatives align with the interim government’s commitment to strengthening institutional frameworks, ensuring justice, and promoting social stability during this transitional period.

The ongoing focus by the EU and the US on supporting Bangladesh’s reform agenda underscores the importance of this transitional period in shaping the nation’s future. Both international actors continue to advocate for inclusive, consensus-based reforms that uphold democratic principles and foster stability.
