Cab citizens committee to look into rural electricity crisis

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) formed a five-member citizen’s committee to settle the dispute between Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) and Rural Electricity Association (REA) ( Palli Vidyut Samity).

CAB arranged a virtual meeting with central committee members and districts on Saturday noon.
This citizens committee was formed on Saturday.

According to CAB, the electricity system is at risk due to the ongoing dispute between the Rural Electrification Board and the Rural Electricity Societies. On October 17, the agitating officers and employees of Pobis stopped the electricity supply of 60 of the 80 Palli Vidyut Samity .

As a result, rural electricity consumers are suffering.
Consumerrs Rights organization CAB also said that, there is a public fear that at any time a large number of electricity consumers in the country may suffer from an even more extreme crisis. In this regard, this civic committee has been formed to resolve the dispute.

The members of the committee are Professor dr. M Shamsul Alam, President of CAB Consumer Grievance Redressal Committee, Retired Professor Badrul Imam and Professor M.M Akash, of Dhaka University, Professor Sharmind Nilormi of Jahangirnagar University and Legal Advisor of CAB, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua.

CAB also said that the committee will submit its report within the next 10 working days and identify the reasons and make specific recommendations for resolving the dispute.
