Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has urged the people of Bangladesh to refrain from further attacks on properties linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family, members of the Awami League, or any individual, in an effort to restore full law and order across the country.
In a statement issued yesterday, the interim government acknowledged the frustrations of activists who have targeted properties, recognising that many of them and their loved ones suffered under Hasina’s rule. However, the government emphasised the need to move forward, ensuring that anger does not disrupt national stability.
The interim administration strongly condemned any attempts by Hasina, even from her refuge in New Delhi, to incite unrest in Bangladesh.
Despite the grievances against the previous regime, the government made a strong appeal for citizens to respect the rule of law.
The statement highlighted that upholding legal principles would reinforce Bangladesh’s image as a nation committed to justice and order. According to the chief adviser’s press office, maintaining law and order is crucial in distinguishing the new administration from the past regime.
Meanwhile, Dr Yunus suggested that the earliest possible date for the next national election would be the end of this year.
Speaking to NHK World, the international wing of Japan’s public broadcaster, on Wednesday, he underscored the significance of the election as a crucial step towards restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
Reflecting on the nation’s condition when he assumed office, Dr Yunus described the country as being in disarray. “Given the circumstances when we took charge, I believe we have made significant progress.
The nation was in a state of devastation-its economy, political structure, and judicial system were all severely damaged,” he stated. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the country’s future.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate emphasised his vision of a resilient Bangladesh. He aspires to see the country regain its footing and emerge even stronger. His remarks to NHK highlighted his commitment to strengthening the nation’s democratic and economic structures.
Dr Yunus expressed confidence that once the election is conducted, the new government will inherit a stable foundation. This, he believes, will enable the elected leaders to function effectively and drive the country forward. Ensuring a smooth transition remains a top priority for the interim administration.
Security and stability remain top priorities, and any disregard for the law poses risks to both lives and property.
The government reassured citizens that efforts are underway to rebuild a safer Bangladesh, underlining the importance of collective discipline in this process. For those who fought to overthrow the Hasina regime in July and August, the commitment to human and civil rights must remain unwavering.
Supporters of a just Bangladesh must exercise caution to avoid actions that could create false equivalences between the current government and the ousted autocrats. The government stressed that maintaining high ethical standards is essential in shaping international perception and ensuring the success of the transition.
The security forces are fully prepared to uphold law and order and protect all citizens. The administration reiterated that any attempt to destabilise the nation through provocation or violence would be met with strict action. Acts of destruction or incitement of disorder will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face justice.
The government also cautioned that attacks on properties linked to the former regime could provide an opportunity for its members to attract international attention and spread misinformation. It emphasised that maintaining discipline and peace is critical in securing global support for the ongoing trials of past leaders accused of crimes against humanity.
Chief Adviser Yunus urged citizens to channel their energy into constructive and peaceful efforts that contribute to national progress. He called on the people to remain vigilant and ensure that Bangladesh continues on the path of security, dignity, and sustainable development.
