Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus has urged swift and decisive action to recover billions of stolen funds from both the banking sector and other financial channels. This plea comes as the government plans to introduce a new law to streamline the legal process for recovering the stolen money.

Speaking at a crucial meeting with the 11-member taskforce formed in September of last year, Dr. Yunus emphasized the need for an expedited recovery process. The meeting, held at the Foreign Service Academy, was also attended by key government officials, including the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.

According to Alam, a new law is being formulated to facilitate the return of stolen funds. In the absence of a sitting Parliament, the law will be enacted through an ordinance, following a standard procedure. Alam stated, “The government is determined to recover the stolen money at any cost. It’s a matter of national priority, and we consider it a kind of highway robbery.”

The government has already engaged with around 200 law firms and is negotiating agreements with approximately 30 firms to assist with the recovery process. Efforts are focused on 11 major companies and individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members. Alam also cited a case where an individual had reportedly sent Tk 400-500 crore abroad under the guise of tuition fees, highlighting the scale of the financial misconduct.

The taskforce will continue to investigate the full extent of money laundering and its various channels, with the goal of identifying the individuals and locations involved. Dr. Yunus has instructed all parties involved to exert their best efforts to ensure that the stolen funds are returned as quickly as possible.

Future meetings are scheduled monthly, with the next meeting set to take place after Eid. The government remains committed to addressing the issue of financial corruption and recovering the stolen assets.
