Bulkhead sinks into Meghna

A bulkhead loaded with sand has sunk in the Meghna River after hitting a pillar of the Syed Nazrul Islam Road Bridge at the Ashuganj end of Brahmanbaria.
The accident occurred on Saturday morning around 5:30 am at Ashuganj end of the Meghna River.
According to eyewitnesses, while it was on its way to Dhaka from the border area of Sunamganj, loaded with sand, the bulkhead hit the pillar of the Syed Nazrul Islam Road Bridge at the Ashuganj end of the Meghna River and sank in an instant. At that time, 6 people, including the helmsman, who were on the bulkhead, swam to the shore and saved their lives.
Later, on receiving information , Naval Police, BIWTA officials visited the scene.
Eyewitness Yaqub Ali, master of the MV Memory 34 ship, said, “I woke up at around 5:45 in the morning and saw that a bulkhead had collided with a bridge pillar and had burst in the middle and sunk. At that time, the three people on the bulkhead climbed onto the bridge pillar, while the other three swam to the river bank to save their lives.”
Another eyewitness, Noor Nabi, the skipper of the MV Meghna ship, said, “I woke up after hearing a loud noise and saw a bulkhead sinking near the bridge pillar. Later, the bulkhead was submerged in the water due to a strong current.
In this regard, Inspector Md. Mobarak of Naval Police,Bhairab Outpost said, “After receiving the news in the morning, I went to the spot and spoke to the witnesses and found out the truth about the bulkhead sinking. However, as the entire bulkhead was submerged in water, no sign is visible. No one was found on the sunken bulkhead.
Necessary measures are being taken to rescue it,” he added
