Bulkhead Sinks After Collision with Launch on Buriganga, Two Workers’ Bodies Recovered

A sand-laden bulkhead named MV Kasfa Shahana, which had stopped in dense fog, sank after being hit by a Dhaka-bound launch Sundarban-16 on the Buriganga River at Fatullah in Narayanganj. Among the five workers on board, three managed to jump off and swim ashore, while two were trapped inside and died. Both of the deceased worked as lascars on the bulkhead. The deceased were identified as Shakil Ahmed Jahirul (24), son of Amir Hawlader from Char Garbadi village in Dumki, Patuakhali, and Hasan (20) from Jhalakathi. The accident occurred around 6:00am on Friday (26 December) in the Dharamganj area of the Buriganga River in Fatullah.
Responding to the incident, river police, Coast Guard, and Fire Service divers launched a rescue operation and recovered the bodies of Jahirul and Hasan from the engine room of the sunken bulkhead around 3:45pm. The bodies were later handed over to Pagla River Police. Md. Alamgir Hossain, Additional DIG of River Police (Narayanganj Region), said the accident occurred due to dense fog. Upon receiving information, the Coast Guard, Pagla River Police, and Fire Service divers arrived at the scene and began the rescue operation. The bodies of the two missing workers were recovered in the afternoon. Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) SM Faiz Uddin stated that the launch responsible for the accident has been seized and kept at Sadarghat in Dhaka. Legal action against those involved is underway.
