BUET student expelled, jailed for raping

The university authorities temporarily expelled Sreeshanth Roy, a student of Ahsan Ullah Hall, 21st batch, EEE Department, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), on Wednesday night for allegedly confessing to raping his Muslim student and making obscene and offensive remarks about Muslim women and clothing on the social media Reddit and the student was arrested and sent to the police court, where he was sent to jail under the Cyber Security Act.
On Wednesday (October 21), around 11 pm, BUET students gathered on the university campus and protested demanding justice for Sreeshanth Roy. During the protest, it was also alleged that Sreeshanth’s father threatened to file a case against the students. At one point, the BUET administration temporarily expelled the accused student around 1 am.
On Wednesday night, a notice signed by Professor Dr. AKM Masud, Director of the University’s Student Welfare Department, said, “This is to inform everyone that the studentship of Sreeshant Roy (2106169), a student of the ’21st batch’ of the EEE department of this university, has been temporarily cancelled.”
After the expulsion, the police came and arrested him and took him to the police station, when the students started throwing eggs at Sreeshanth.
However, no evidence was found against Sreeshanth Roy for making derogatory remarks about the Prophet (PBUH).
Despite the news of Sreeshanth’s temporary expulsion, the students did not leave the campus and continued his agitation for a long time for permanent expulsion.
Journalists went to the BUET campus to gather news at that time but the security personnel there prevented them from entering.
BUET students said that after Sreeshanth raped a Muslim student, he proudly published the matter on social media. However, a group of students alleged that the ID used on Reddit as ‘WeeklyService923’ is his.
In several posts from the same ID, he mentioned himself as a student of the ‘BUET EEE-21’ batch, and later in another post, he mentioned using Basus brand earbuds. His classmates confirmed that Sreeshanth Roy is a student of ‘BUET EEE-21’ and also uses the brand’s earbuds regularly.
The Reddit user went on a trip to the Mustang area of Nepal in June 2025. At the same time (June 3), Sreeshanth Roy posted a photo taken from Mustang on his personal social media.
Many of his classmates confirmed that the tone, language and word choice of the accused Reddit ID’s writing style are very similar to Sreeshanth’s writing style.
In addition, Sreeshanth Roy was not the only one who signed the paper during the signature drive to boycott politics at the university. Even his various Awami League-related statuses on Facebook are now viral.
