Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Mohtassim Masud, who was killed after being hit by a private car on the Kanchan-Kuril Highway in Purbachal, Rupganj, Narayanganj.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mehedi Islam said on Friday that the arrests were made early Friday. The vehicle involved in the crash was also seized.
According to the police, the arrested individuals include A-level student Mubin Al Mamun from Mirpur DOHS in Dhaka and his friends Mirajul Karim and Asif Chowdhury.
The deceased, Mohtassim Masud, was the son of Masud Mia from the Kuchia area of Alfadanga police station, Faridpur.
Two other Buet students, Mehedi Hasan and Amit Saha, were critically injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at Square Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, respectively.
Quoting the victim’s family, ASP Mehedi Islam said that on Thursday night around 8pm, Mohtassim Masud, a second-year student of Buet’s CSE department, went to the Purbachal Neela Market area with two of his friends.
At around 3am, they began their journey back to Dhaka.
Near the checkpost at Balur Bridge in Sector 1 of the Kanchan-Kuril Highway, police stopped them for questioning.
At that moment, a reckless private car broke through the checkpost barricade and hit their motorcycle, killing Mohtassim Masud on the spot.
The other two students on the motorcycle, Amit Saha and Mehedi Hasan Khan, were severely injured.
Police recovered Masud’s body from the scene and admitted the injured students to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
