Students of universities offering BSc in Engineering have recently protested demanding equal recruitment rights and overall benefits compared to government project engineers. The movement was spurred by the recent unrest in which students from various educational institutions delivering BSc in Engineering took to the streets, says a press release.
On 27 August 2025, students staged a peaceful demonstration when police intervened, dispersing them with tear gas and baton charges. Many students were reportedly injured. The teacher association of the respective universities has condemned these police actions and demanded a proper investigation.
On 28 August 2025, a special meeting was convened by the university teachers’ association, issuing a statement condemning the brutal treatment of students and calling for the responsible authorities to be held accountable.
The meeting resolved to urge the government to take prompt steps to investigate the incident and stressed the need to form a national committee including university teacher representatives to address the recruitment parity issue for graduate engineers.
The association also demanded the restoration of a safe and conducive campus environment, urging authorities to ensure incidents like these are not repeated.
