The hanging body of a female student was found in the reading room of Bangomata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of Barishal University (BU) on early Monday. The student’s name is Shefa Noor Ebadi, a fourth year student of the ninth batch of mass communication and journalism department of the university. Shefa lived in room number 1411 of the said Bangamata Hall of the university.
Classmates concealing identity said that the student committed suicide by keeping her boyfriend on video call. She was an activist of anti-quota movement and physically assaulted by her lover, a student of philosophy department of the BU, during an altercation some hours ago of committing suicide.
Hena Rani Biswas, the provost of the hall of the university, said that the police recovered Shefa’s body on early Monday. Barishal Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahman Mukul said that the student was found hanging on the third floor of Bangomata Hall with a veil attached to the window grill of the reading room.
She was rescued and taken to Barishal Sher Bangla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead. Police will check call list of her mobile phone. The body preserved at the morgue for post-mortem and family members informed. The next decision will be taken in consultation with the family and the university administration, the OC said.
Barisal University proctor Dr. Abdul Qayyum said, such incidents are undesirable. Mental Health and Guiding Center has been opened in the university. Students are regularly counseled there. However, we will take more initiatives. So that common students refrain from such acts in future.
