The previous nameplates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have been removed, and new banners bearing a different name have been installed. The university has been renamed Bangladesh Medical University (BMU).

Banners with the new name were observed across various blocks of the campus on Saturday morning. According to sources, doctors, officials, employees of BSMMU, and students from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were responsible for putting up these new name banners. However, the university administration has not issued any official statement regarding the change.

Dr Md Ruhul Kuddus Biplob, private secretary to the vice-chancellor, stated: “I saw the new name banners for the first time on Saturday morning. The name they have chosen is one of several options under consideration by the university authorities. Discussions with the ministry regarding the name change are ongoing, and an official decision is expected within the next 2-3 working days.”

Professor Dr AK Azad, pro-vice-chancellor (administration), added: “No final decision has been made regarding the name change. Several names are being considered. A new official announcement will be made after consultations with students and approval from the authorities.”

Earlier, on Wednesday night, protesters removed the signboards bearing Bangabandhu’s name from various locations within the university. The first signboard was taken down from C Block, followed by others in different parts of the university.
