Tensions rose along the Kochakata border in Kurigram on Friday night after India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly attempted to push a group of people into Bangladeshi territory, according to officials from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident reportedly took place near the Shovarkuti and Shiperhat border points in Kedar Union. Local residents and BGB personnel quickly mobilised to block the attempted intrusion.
Witnesses said the situation began unfolding around 7:00pm, when BSF personnel from Golakganj Police Station in Assam’s Dhubri district gathered 50 to 60 individuals at a school near the Indian village of Faiskarkuti, close to the border. With lights in the area deliberately switched off, BSF allegedly tried to push the group across the border under the cover of darkness.
In response, several hundred Bangladeshi villagers formed a human chain stretching nearly one kilometre along the border. Residents remained on alert throughout the night to prevent any unauthorized crossing.
Soon after the villagers assembled, multiple BGB teams from the Kochakata and Kedar camps, supported by members of Ansar and the Village Defence Party (VDP), reinforced the area to block the attempted push-in.
BSF troops reportedly approached the zero line of the border around 2:00am and tried to initiate communication with BGB personnel, but received no response. By 3:00am, the BSF forces had withdrawn from the area.
“We worked in coordination with local residents and Ansar personnel to prevent any illegal entry attempts,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Ul Haque, Commanding Officer of BGB-22. “Vigilance has been stepped up, and patrols along the border have been intensified.”
Security remains heightened in the area as a precautionary measure following the attempted intrusion.
