The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Tuesday, June 25, ordered the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited to freeze the beneficiary owner (BO) accounts of withdrawn revenue official Matiur Rahman and his family members. Concurrently, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit directed all banks to freeze the accounts of Matiur and his family for 30 days.
These actions were taken at the request of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which is investigating allegations of corruption against Matiur Rahman. Matiur is accused of abusing his senior positions at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) over the years to amass wealth worth hundreds of crores of taka, including substantial financial and real estate assets.
The alleged corruption of Matiur came into the spotlight after his son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, posted a photo on social media of a sacrificial goat, claiming it was purchased for Tk 15 lakh. This post raised public questions about the NBR official’s income sources and triggered further scrutiny.
