BSEC hosts seminar to boost IPOs, capital market understanding

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) hosted a seminar on July 16 to enhance understanding of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and capital market mechanisms.
Bringing together regulators, experts, and academics, the event focused on key IPO processes, market rules, and pricing methods highlighting BSEC’s commitment to transparency and market efficiency.
According to a press release issued on July 17 by BSEC Director and Spokesperson Abul Kalam, the seminar was convened at BSEC’s initiative, underscoring the commission’s commitment to fostering transparency and efficiency in the capital market.
Distinguished BSEC Commissioners Md. Mohsin Chowdhury, Md. Ali Akbar, and Farzana Lalarukh attended the seminar, joined by all Executive Directors, Directors, Additional Directors, and officers from the CFD and CMRRC departments.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mahmud Osman Imam, Dean of the Faculty of Business Education and Professor of Finance at Dhaka University.
Dr. Imam provided an in-depth analysis of crucial topics including the Public Issue Rules and their recent amendments, motivations for companies to list on the stock exchange, and the pros and cons of market listing.
He further elaborated on technical aspects such as the price discovery process, different IPO pricing methods including book building, fixed price, Dutch auction, and English auction systems, as well as the electronic subscription system.
Additionally, he explained share lock-in regulations and the underwriter’s role in stabilizing IPO prices-providing valuable insights for regulators and market participants alike.
