A chilling act of violence shook Old Dhaka on Monday morning when Saif Mamun (38) was shot dead in broad daylight in front of the Dhaka National Medical College Hospital.
Police described the killing as a planned and swift execution carried out by unidentified assailants.
Ahsan Uddin Sami, Deputy Commissioner of the Lalbagh Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the incident and said Mamun had long been involved in organised crime and was known as one of Old Dhaka’s most feared gang leaders. “CCTV footage shows two assailants arriving on a motorcycle and firing several rounds before fleeing the scene,” Sami said.
“Mamun was rushed to National Medical Hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.”
Law enforcement sources said Mamun had survived a previous assassination attempt in 2023, during which a passerby was killed.
The deceased was identified as Tariq Saif Mamun (38), son of SM Iqbal Hossain of Mobarak Colony, Lakshmipur Sadar. He had been residing with his family in Aftabnagar.
His wife, Ripa Akter, told reporters that Mamun was a BNP supporter and a small businessman.
“He had a court hearing today. Later, we heard he’d been shot. When we reached Dhaka Medical, he was already gone,” she said in tears.
Witness Mohibullah, ward master at Dhaka National Medical College Hospital, said, “Around 11 am, we heard gunshots outside. When we ran out, a man was lying in a pool of blood. He was brought inside immediately and then referred to DMCH for advanced treatment.”
However, Mamun’s brother, Hafiz, rejected claims linking him to criminal activities. “My brother was an ordinary man, not a gangster or political leader. We don’t know who did this or why,” he said.
Inspector Md Faruk, officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed that Mamun’s body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination.
He added that Sutrapur Police Station has been notified and that an investigation is underway to identify the shooters and determine their motive.
The brazen daylight attack in one of Old Dhaka’s busiest areas has sparked public outrage and fear, reigniting concerns about gang violence and the state of urban security in the capital.
