Ulipur (Kurigram) Correspondent :

A newly constructed bridge over the Gangaram River in Rupar Khamar area of Dharanibari Union, Ulipur Upazila, Kurigram, has collapsed, leaving locals from Dharanibari and nearby Durgapur Union struggling with transportation.

The 34-meter bridge, built at a cost of BDT 19,96,920 from Minabazar to Majbila road near Mohammad Ali Master’s house, was damaged after recent dredging of the Gangaram River.

Soil from the wing walls at the ends of the bridge shifted, creating deep holes. Water began flowing under the bridge, washing away the connecting road, and eventually, the entire bridge structure gave way.

The collapse has halted movement for vehicles and pedestrians, affecting thousands of residents and students. Locals including Imam Abdud Daian reported that daily travel, such as attending prayers at the mosque, has become nearly impossible.

Students from nearby schools and madrasas, including Latif Razia Fazil Degree Madrasa, Panawalla Alia Madrasa, and four Hafizi madrasas, are unable to reach their institutions.

Residents blame poorly planned river maintenance for the collapse and urge authorities to rebuild the bridge as soon as possible to restore connectivity for around 40,000 people across 30 villages.
