Brent Christensen next US envoy to Bangladesh
Staff Reporter :
Trump Administration has officially appointed Brent Christensen as the next US Ambassador to Bangladesh.
In his verified LinkedIn page, Christensen wrote: “I am honored to be confirmed by the United States Senate and deeply grateful to President Trump for the opportunity to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Bangladesh.” The White House first announced his nomination on September 2 last year.
Brent Christensen is a senior officer in the United States Foreign Service, according to information on the US State Department’s website.
He previously served at the US Embassy in Dhaka as Political and Economic Counselor from 2019 to 2021.
During more than 20 years in the Foreign Service, Christensen has held numerous senior positions both in Washington and abroad.
Among these was his role as foreign policy adviser to the commander of US Strategic Command, where he focused on the international aspects of the United States’ global strategic deterrence mission.
His overseas assignments have included postings at US embassies in Manila, San Salvador, Riyadh, and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as work on North Korea policy and arms transfer issues.
He has also served as deputy director of the Office of Regional Security and Arms Transfers and as a Pearson Fellow with the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.
Christensen holds a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the US National War College, a Master’s degree in statistics from Texas A&M University, and a Bachelor’s degree in economics and managerial studies from Rice University.
He speaks Spanish, German, and Vietnamese, and has studied several additional languages.
His appointment comes at a time when Bangladesh and the United States are engaged in trade negotiations.
Under President Trump, the US introduced a new tariff framework that initially raised duties on Bangladeshi goods to 37 percent, later reducing them to 20 percent after talks in August.
Bangladesh is seeking a further reduction as part of broader efforts to narrow the trade gap.
Overall, Christensen’s career reflects extensive international and policy experience, spanning multiple regions and encompassing economic, security, and diplomatic roles.
