A BRAC University delegation met with the leadership of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) recently as a part of ongoing efforts to deepen global engagement and academic collaboration.

BRAC University was represented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar and Registrar Dr David Dowland while the ACU by its Secretary General Professor Colin Riordan and Head of Communications and Public Affairs Dr Laura Pritsch.

The discussions at the ACU’s London headquarters on 26 October 2025 focused on strengthening partnerships that advance social progress, sustainability, and applied research across the Commonwealth. The meeting explored ways to build on the shared vision of both institutions—using higher education as a force for creating more resilient and equitable societies.

Key discussion points included collaborative opportunities in building resilient civic communities, developing sustainable cities, and expanding research exchange initiatives that address pressing global challenges.

Professor Riordan welcomed the discussion and expressed enthusiasm about visiting Bangladesh in 2026, where he hopes to continue these conversations with BRAC University and other ACU member institutions. BRAC University became a member of the ACU in 2021, joining a distinguished global network of more than 500 universities across the Commonwealth.

Through its membership, BRAC University contributes to a dynamic community committed to knowledge sharing, capacity building, and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education and research. The ACU currently has 16 member universities in Bangladesh, reflecting its long-standing commitment to fostering academic cooperation and development in the region.

Established in 1913, the ACU remains the world’s first and oldest international university network, connecting institutions dedicated to excellence and collaboration across borders. The London meeting took place during the BRAC University delegation’s visit to the United Kingdom to expand partnerships with global universities and research bodies, with the aim of driving innovation, inclusion, and international engagement from the Global South.

It also advances BRAC University’s efforts towards a number of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action and Partnerships for the Goals.
